Have I wasted a year of my life?

I've spent the past year studying games design at college but only to a very basic level. We weren't even taught how to script. Only one teacher knew how to code out of four teachers and he wasn't exactly an expert at it. The man didn't even have any qualifications. The course seemed very business orientated rather than focusing on game theory too. When we did get around to doing projects, we were told to make 3d walkthroughs for local businesses. It took until the very last term before we were tasked with trying to create our own, unique games. Even then the teaching was very poor quality. If you didn't know how to code already then your game was not going to be very playable.

Although I never wanted a job making games, I would have at least liked to have come away feeling like I had learned something. Instead they tell us to go away and learn in our own time. This is surely missing the point? Why should I even bother turning up if I'm only going to be learning things in my own time? One of the teachers doesn't even play games, the other two don't know how to make them. Three teachers out of four on a games design course who don't even know the first thing about making games. I really am wasting my time with this course.

I have genuinely learned more about game design from watching episodes of Game Grumps on Youtube, than I have from spending a year on this course.

Now what about the social aspect of the course? Surely I have met new people and made lots of friends?

...

Nope. Not a single person on my course is my friend. They couldn't give one s*** if I stay or go. Nor I them.

I quit. This course is not worth the effort and I really do think a year of my life has been wasted. I should have done something else. Perhaps a course where the teachers are actually qualified to teach the subject?

It definitely does sound like wasted time. How the hell did they get a job teaching it if they weren't even qualified for it?

Even if you don't learn a lot, the credits are what matters if you want this to be your degree. It's like working for money. You couldn't care less about your job, but you need to do it to get from point A to B.

What's the point of that minimal learning if he hasn't really learned anything from those crappy teachers?

Doesn't matter, at least from the perspective of the people giving you a degree. Most of school is bulls***. I've always been able to learn more on my own, but if I did that, I would have never graduated highschool.

Eh i guess in the end it doesn't matter since Pelador doesn't even want a job as a coder.

First;

1. Were you ever happy in the class?
2. Did you learn anything of value?
3 . Are you happier now than you were 1 year ago at all?

I was only happy when I was coding. This is but a very small part of the course and we rarely get to do it. It usually comes at the end of a term.

I didn't learn anything except for the names of game design programs.

I am more happy now and I do attribute that to the social side of college but I can't just go to college for the social life.

Then you didn't waste a year of your life! You might have taken a crappy class, but you're good. :)

You're right. Thinking about it, the alternative would have been sitting in front of my computer, slowly losing my mind and my self esteem. At least I was getting out of the house and talking to people. The fact that the course was pointless is irrelevant in this regard.

However seeing as I'm being forced to move into another group with only 12 people in it, I don't think I will bother with this second year. It's not worth it.

Thanks a lot Smoochi, I feel a bit better now. You're a wise and sensible lady.

I am guilty sorry everyone. RIP Emile Griffith. Jeremy Kyle is a prick. go make sumin of urself

Is it gonna go on for another year? If you just started doing more game design stuff in the last term then if it's going to continue for another year that could become the focus.

Well, I definitely know how you feel. Applied straight out of school for a Btec in Graphic Design ... and got 90% Fine Art, 5% Photography (with a teacher who never showed), 5% Graphic Design where I basically learned all the things about Photoshop that I already knew. Dropped the course, switched colleges, never looked back.

But it's not a year of your life wasted, not 100%. Your situation is definitely worse, from the sound of it (sounds like your college gives even less of a crap than mine did), and I'm actually appalled by your teachers' attitudes - but I agree 100% with what Smochi said. And at least you know how terrible the course is now, right? Enough to make an informed decision on whether or not to return. =)

It's a shame, as my brother recently experienced a similar thing. I swear, it's like colleges don't ... care ... oh. Wait. =/
Oh, look. Another personal blog about writing. Whatever.

Well maybe the first year was like the foundations for the second one.
It might get better in the next year, and the reason you had to do all that basic stuff was so that you can confidently move on in your second year onto harder things.
